“ALL HUMAN BEINGS—male and female—are created in the image of God. Each is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents, and, as such, each has a divine nature and destiny. Gender is an essential characteristic of individual premortal, mortal, and eternal identity and purpose.” (Family: A Proclamation to the world).
In the premortal life, God created man. Man was all alone in the Garden of Eden. So, God made him a ‘help meet’, whom Adam called Woman. At first, all things were spiritual, as was Adam and his wife. God, gave them commandments or instructions;
“…Be fruitful and multiply…” (Genesis 1:28)
16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:
17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. (Genesis 2:16)
Adam and his wife were ‘enticed’ by Lucifer to partake of the ‘fruit’ and eventually they succumbed to his enticing and partook. No one forced them to partake, in the end it was their choice. To partake of the fruit was a sin, the first sin, that led to the Fall and to Adam and his wife being cast out of the Garden of Eden, to them becoming mortal, but it was only by doing so, that they were able to fulfill God’s commandment to ‘multiply.’ If they had remained innocent, in the Garden of Eden they would not have been able to do so.
It was only after the Fall that Adam, names his wife, Eve – the mother of all living (Genesis 3:20). Outside the Garden the world was not so pleasant – they were told that they would need to work hard to take care of themselves. Eve, was told that in sorrow she would bring forth children.
And, Lucifer was banished, as an enemy to mankind –
14 And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:
15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. (Genesis 3:14-15).
Lucifer could, and can, still tempt mankind, but mankind as the right to deny him.
Without the Fall, man would not have become mortal and all living things would have remained in a premortal or spiritual state. Man may have know no misery in the Garden, bu they would have known no joy either. Without the Fall, mankind would still be in the Garden, and would not have been able to progress, multiply or replenish the earth as Adam and Eve had been commanded to do. By the Fall, man could die and eventually all man would know what God knows, in the eternities.
I do not believe, no have i ever believed that the sin Adam and Eve committed was a sexual sin, there is nowhere in scripture to indicate that this was so. The sin they committed was to partake of the fruit of the tree, that God had commanded them not to partake of. I do not believe that Adam and Eve understood what it was they were doing, but did it because of the enticing of Lucifer.
However, without the Fall, all mankind would not exist. I would not exist and neither would you, but without their disobedience the 7 billion on the earth today, would not exist.
I believe man and woman to be different, but complimentary to each other. I believe that gender is part of our identity and we should embrace it as such. I believe that God made us different so that we can support each other. I accept that there are many people in the world, who are attracted to the same-sex – i do not see this as a sin, but it is not the Lord’s way. I have a number of friends who are homosexual or lesbian and i love them for who they are and the colour they bring to life. God mad Adam for Eve or man for woman, this Lord’s only way.
Yet, all those who keep God’s commandments are entitled to not only eternal life, for we are all entitled to that, but exaltation too, no matter what our gender or preferences, we are all His children and He loves us, no matter what –“All human beings -male and female – are created in the image of God.”
